Virgin Islands Department of Education Announces Closure of All Public-Schools Territory-Wide on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, due to Inclement Weather

The Virgin Islands Department of Education (VIDE) announces that all public schools throughout the territory will remain closed on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, due to adverse weather conditions, characterized by heavy rain, strong winds, and low visibility in our region. In light of this, parents and guardians are kindly requested to keep their children at home, prioritizing their safety and well-being.

It is important to emphasize that public-school students should refrain from attending their respective school campuses. Additionally, public-school faculty and staff are also advised not to report to their usual work locations. However, essential school workers such as principals, assistant principals, custodians, and maintenance workers/laborers are required to report to assigned schools at 8:00 am to assess their respective campuses. Additionally, employees at the district and state levels are required to report to work at their normal time to fulfill their usual duties.

Please remain vigilant for further updates concerning public-school operations on Thursday, February 8th. We urge everyone to stay connected through official communication channels, including our website, social media platform, and local news outlets, to stay informed of the latest developments.

We extend our sincere appreciation for your cooperation and understanding during this period of disruption. By working together, we can effectively ensure the safety and well-being of all members within our public-school community.

Virgin Islands Department of Education Conducts Investigation Regarding Vandalism of School Bus Resulting in Suspension of Service

The Virgin Islands Department of Education (VIDE), Office of the Insular Superintendent, St. Croix District, is actively reaching out to parents, guardians, and students for assistance in relation to a recent act of vandalism on a school bus that occurred on Monday, January 22, 2024. Bus #17, which was transporting students from the Educational Complex High School to the Paradise/Williams Delight area, suffered significant damage. The incident was promptly reported to the school’s administrative team by the bus manager and is currently under investigation by VIDE officials.

Due to the substantial damage resulting from this regrettable incident, Bus #17 and the services along its route will be temporarily suspended until further notice. Letters have been issued to notify parents and guardians of the service suspension. It is crucial to emphasize that the safety and security of students remain the top priority for the VIDE and all its affiliates. Such behavior is deemed unacceptable as it reflects a disregard for the resources, equipment, and services provided for students.

The school’s administration seeks the cooperation of students who ride Bus #17 as they work to efficiently address and resolve this situation. Parents and guardians will be notified once the investigation is concluded, and bus services are set to resume for the Paradise/Williams Delight area. The VIDE seeks the collaboration of all stakeholders involved in this matter.
